Study: Labiaplasty Prompted by Derogatory Comments
According to the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, labiaplasty procedures increased 16 percent in 2015 from the previous year. A recent study has identified one of the most common reasons women decide to undergo this procedure. Researchers from Flinders University in Adelaide found derogatory comments about the appearance of the labia is one reason why some women have pursued labiaplasty. In this blog post, plastic surgeon Dr. Ronald DeMars discusses the study’s findings in detail, as well as the benefits of labiaplasty.
About the Study
The study published in the Aesthetic Surgery Journal looked at 14 women who had undergone labiaplasty. Women were interviewed and asked about their reasons for having the procedure. Approximately 71 percent of participants could recall at least one negative experience that influenced their distress surrounding the appearance of their labia. Many women said they received negative comments from former sexual partners. Other women received negative comments about the way they looked in swimsuits or leggings and yoga pants from friends, family members and even medical professionals. Participants said these negative comments influenced their decision to pursue labiaplasty.
Another frequently cited reason for pursuing labiaplasty was media influence. The majority of participants (71 percent) said they compared their own labial appearance with images they considered to be more “normal” appearances of the labia. Although this study is small, its results reinforce the findings of similar studies.
What Labiaplasty Offers
Many women who undergo labiaplasty report that the procedure is life-changing. In this particular study, all women reported that they were satisfied with the improvements in the appearance and physical function of their labia. A majority of participants reported experiencing a self-confidence boost following the procedure. Dr. DeMars has performed labiaplasty on many women with enlarged, elongated, unusually shaped or asymmetrical labia. Some of the benefits of labiaplasty include:
Improved self-confidence: anxiety and insecurity stemming from self-consciousness about the labia are typically resolved.
Physical relief: no more chafing, rashes or infection caused by the labia rubbing against clothes or other skin; clothing fits better; activities like running and bicycling become more enjoyable.
Boost in libido: sex becomes more desirable and physically enjoyable.
