Liposuction for Weight Loss: Fact vs. Fiction
Undoubtedly one of the biggest areas of misconception surrounding liposuction is its relation to weight loss. Can liposuction actually help you lose weight? Are the slimming effects of liposuction permanent? Here, Portland plastic surgeon Dr. Ronald DeMars shares the truth on the biggest myths about the procedure.
Myth: Liposuction Can Help Me Lose Weight
Fact: Liposuction is a fat removal procedure that helps patients slim their physique. That being said, it cannot help patients lose a dramatic amount of weight. Liposuction is designed to fine-tune the body’s contours by eliminating small, concentrated areas of fat that are hard to remove with diet and exercise. If you wish to lose a large amount of weight, you should do so via diet and exercise or bariatric surgery. Once you are close to your ideal weight, liposuction may be a good option for putting the finishing touches on your body.
Myth: You Can’t Gain Weight After Liposuction
Fact: Although the effects of liposuction are considered to be permanent, it is possible to gain weight after the procedure. The fat cells that do remain in the body can expand and result in weight gain. While gaining five to 10 pounds after liposuction may not make much of a difference, significant weight gain (e.g., 10 percent of the body’s overall weight) can sabotage the slimming effects of liposuction. Patients should exercise regularly and eat a healthy diet to maintain their liposuction results for years to come.
Myth: Anyone Can Get Liposuction
Fact: Not everyone is a suitable candidate for liposuction. For instance, obese patients are not considered to be good candidates as health problems caused by obesity can make surgery too risky. People with certain health conditions that can interfere with the body’s healing process are also not eligible for liposuction.
Ideal candidates for liposuction are individuals who are near their ideal weight and wish to refine their body by eliminating small fat deposits. Patients should also be in good overall health and not smoke.
