The Latest Statistics from the American Society of Plastic Surgeons
More people are undergoing plastic surgery, according to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS). The latest report from the organization revealed that Americans spent a record-breaking $16 billion on plastic surgery procedures last year. So which procedures came out on top? In this blog post, Dr. Ronald DeMars, who performs cosmetic surgery in Portland, reveals the top surgical and non-surgical procedures, as well as other trends in plastic surgery.
Breast Augmentation Is Still the Top Surgical Procedure
For the tenth year in a row, breast augmentation is the most popular cosmetic surgical procedure in the U.S. A total of 290,467 breast augmentation procedures were performed in 2016, a 4 percent increase from 2015. Silicone gel implants accounted for 84 percent of breast augmentation procedures while saline implants only accounted for 16 percent. This comes as no surprise to Dr. DeMars as silicone gel implants are preferred by many women because they closely mimic the look and feel of natural breast tissue.
Facelift Makes a Comeback
After having dropped from the top five list of cosmetic surgical procedures in 2015, facelift surgery has made a comeback. Facelift, which addresses various signs of aging in the middle and lower facial areas, saw a 4 percent increase in 2016.
“While there are more options than ever to rejuvenate the face, a facelift done by a board-certified plastic surgeon can give a dramatic, longer-lasting result which is why I am not surprised to see facelifts back in the top five most popular cosmetic surgical procedures,” said ASPS president Dr. Debra Johnson.
Labiaplasty Continues to Rise
Labiaplasty, which reshapes or resizes the labial tissues, increased by 39 percent in 2016. Not only can labiaplasty boost a woman’s confidence in her most intimate body area, it can also relieve physical discomfort caused by excess labial skin and tissue.
Botox Is the Top Non-Surgical Procedure
With over 7 million procedures, Botox is the top non-surgical procedure of 2016. Known as the “lunchtime treatment,” Botox is a quick and easy fix for mild to moderate wrinkles and fine lines on the face. Because results are temporary, patients can prolong their younger-looking appearance with repeat treatments.
