How To Get Rid of Bags Under Eyes

Posted on April 29, 2014 by: Dr. Ronald DeMars

Dealing with under eye bags? Several beauty magazines will give you tips and tricks for removing under-eye puffiness which may help with temporarily relieving puffiness due to poor sleep, consuming too much sodium, or other self-caused triggers. These remedies may include creams, ice packs, make-up tricks or other quick fixes. But for some people who have more significant, permanent under-eye bags, a more lasting solution is needed.

Permanent under-eye bags (as opposed to just temporary puffiness) is caused by aging and/or fat compartments under the eye. Many people visit Dr. DeMars, a plastic surgeon in the Portland, Oregon area to help them get rid of these bags and get a more rested, youthful, healthy look. The proper procedure for these patients is called a lower blepharoplasty (eyelid surgery).

The goal of a lower blepharoplasty is to remove these fat pads, but many patients (about 75% of Dr. DeMars’ lower blepharoplasty patients) decide to combine this procedure with either an upper blepharoplasty and/or a facelift to achieve their overall goal of a younger yet natural-looking appearance.

How long does it take to recover from lower eyelid surgery?

Many patients are relieved to hear that they can undergo and recover from the surgery rather quickly. The out-patient procedure takes about 45 minutes to 1.5 hours depending on the technique used (a decision that should be discussed and decided with your doctor during your consultation), and most patients experience minor pain for only 1-2 days.

Though bruising may last for about 1-3 weeks after the eyelid surgery, many patients can be out-and-about within 3-4 days after the surgery with use of makeup or sunglasses to conceal the bruising. Eyelid surgery patients may also go on long walks shortly post-surgery but should refrain from heavy exercise for about 2-3 weeks.
