Can I Get a Tummy Tuck After a C-Section?
Here at our plastic surgery practice in Portland, we often perform Tummy Tuck surgery at the same time as a Breast Enhancement, which is called a Mommy Makeover. Because the greatest majority of Tummy Tuck patients are moms, and many deliveries are done by C-Section, it is not surprising that we are commonly asked if it’s possible to have a Tummy Tuck after a C-Section. The short answer is, yes, you can! The C-Section scar will not cause a problem with a Tummy Tuck.
Below we will address that question and what you can expect from undergoing a Tummy Tuck in Portland.
The Aesthetic Results of a C-Section
When an Obstetrician does a delivery of your baby by C-Section the most common scar is a low and usually slightly curved scar, although infrequently the scar may be up and down over the center of the lower tummy skin below the belly button. The vertical scar usually heals with a smooth result, but that often is not the case with the standard low horizontal scar. The inside part of the scar sticks to the muscles and so the scar does not move. The overlying skin, which may be looser as a result of the pregnancy, can then sag down over the scar creating a displeasing appearance even in slender, physically fit patients. It can become even worse with a little weight gain.
The Results of a Tummy Tuck after a C-Section
A Tummy Tuck is performed with a longer and lower scar and results in removing a significant amount of the damaged abdominal skin and tightening the remaining skin. Thus the entire C-Section scar, whether low and horizontal or higher and vertical, is removed and the abdominal contours left smooth. At the same time any excess fat can be thinned with liposuction and any muscles separated by the pregnancy can be repaired resulting in the return of a healthy and youthful abdominal contour.
Therefore, if you have had a C-Section, you may be a great candidate for a Tummy Tuck! Many of our similar patients have been very pleased with their new, smoother results. If you have any questions or would like to schedule a consultation, please contact us or call 503-253-3458.
