Unexpected benefits of tummy tuck

The cosmetic benefits of tummy tuck (abdominoplasty) are well-documented. By removing excess, flabby skin and fat, tummy tuck creates a more sculpted and toned abdomen that men and women can feel confident about. Unbeknownst to some patients, the procedure also offers several medical benefits.

Read on as Portland plastic surgeon Dr. Ronald DeMars discusses these benefits in detail.

Improved Posture

Substantial weight gain, such as that which results from pregnancy, causes the abdominal muscles to separate and weaken. This, along with extra belly fat, can strain the back as it tries to compensate for the lack of core strength needed to support the torso. In addition, weak abdominal muscles can lead to a condition known as lordosis, or “sway back.” According to Dr. DeMars, many individuals notice the added benefit of improved core strength and posture thanks to the tightening of the muscles and removal of belly fat during tummy tuck.

Reduction of Stress Urinary Incontinence

A study published in the Aesthetic Surgery Journal found that tummy tuck can alleviate stress urinary incontinence (SUI) following vaginal birth. SUI is characterized as uncontrollable leakage brought on by sneezing, laughing, coughing or exercising. The study surveyed 214 women who underwent tummy tuck with abdominal repair after vaginal birth. Approximately 43 percent of these women said SUI was a “significant concern” after giving birth but only 2 percent reported SUI as a significant problem after tummy tuck.

How does tummy tuck improve SUI? Researchers believe tightening the abdominal muscles and skin can increase support of the pelvic muscles, bladder and urethra, relieving SUI symptoms.

Ventral Hernia Correction

A ventral hernia is a painful condition that occurs when abdominal or intestinal tissue tears through the abdominal wall, creating a pocket or sack. If left untreated, a ventral hernia can lead to serious complications. Many individuals choose to have this condition treated during tummy tuck as both procedures focus on strengthening weakened abdominal muscles. Combining the two procedures is a smart choice as the added muscle strengthening from tummy tuck lowers the chances of hernia recurrence.
