Should I Choose a Plastic Surgeon or Gynecologist for Labiaplasty?

For women who experience physical and/or emotional discomfort due to the shape or size of their labia, labiaplasty can be a life changing procedure. During labiaplasty, the inner vaginal lips, outer vaginal lips or both are resized and sculpted to reduce discomfort and enhance appearance.

If you are thinking about undergoing labiaplasty, you may be wondering whether you should work with a gynecologist or plastic surgeon for the procedure. You may also be wondering if there is a difference in how the procedure is performed by each doctor. Dr. Ronald DeMars, a board certified plastic surgeon, answers these questions in detail.

Gynecologist vs. Plastic Surgeon

When it comes down to it, plastic surgeons are better trained to perform labiaplasty. Many gynecologists’ training focuses on the diagnosis and treatment of issues related to the female reproductive organs. A gynecologist who performs cosmetic surgery can surgically remove excess skin on the inner and outer labia, as can a plastic surgeon. But a plastic surgeon will also have aesthetics in mind when reshaping and removing tissue and skin. By focusing on proper shape, contour and aesthetics, a plastic surgeon is able to minimize scarring, achieve symmetry and ensure that the labia look and feel natural.

As part of their training, board certified plastic surgeons must complete five to seven years of surgical training after medical school. At least three of those years must be dedicated to plastic surgery residency training, which includes a range of procedures for the face and body. By comparison, a gynecologist who performs cosmetic surgery such as labiaplasty may undergo much less cosmetic surgery training and preparation. Their training can range from a one-year cosmetic surgery fellowship to several courses on a wide range of plastic surgery topics.

When selecting a doctor for your labiaplasty procedure, we recommend you choose a plastic surgeon who is trained and skilled in achieving optimal aesthetic and functional results. Verify your plastic surgeon’s credentials and ensure that he or she is board certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgeons.
