What Does Mommy Makeover Treat?

Mommy makeover treats areas of the body that have changed with pregnancy and breastfeeding — primarily, the breasts and abdomen. For example, the breasts may lose volume and look “deflated” or droopy after nursing. The nipples may also point downward. The upper and/or lower abdomen may develop localized fat deposits (known as “love handles”), stretch marks or loose skin. The abdominal muscles may also separate during pregnancy (especially multiple pregnancies).

During your personal mommy makeover consultation, Dr. DeMars will recommend the procedures he feels will deliver the most optimal results.

Your Mommy Makeover Consultation

Your mommy makeover consultation is a good opportunity to accomplish several things: first, Dr. DeMars will examine the areas of your body that have been affected negatively by pregnancy. For example, he will note the quality of the skin and amount of fat on your abdomen and the degree of sagginess in your breasts. You should draw his attention to anything that makes you feel uncomfortable, such as stretch marks or excess fat on your back or flanks.

Dr. DeMars will want to learn more about your specific cosmetic goals. He will ask you questions about your desired surgical outcome, and you may review before-and-after photographs of his previous mommy makeover patients to get a better idea of what the treatment can accomplish.

Information about your health status and medical history will also be recorded to confirm that you are a good candidate for surgery.

If you decide to move forward with mommy makeover surgery, you will receive detailed instructions about how to prepare and what to expect afterward, so you can make the proper arrangements. You are encouraged to ask questions you have about the upcoming surgery.

Procedural Details

Your mommy makeover procedure will be tailored to your individual needs. Depending on the areas of your body that you would like to improve, your mommy makeover could include:

Breast augmentation: implants are placed to enhance the size and shape of your bust.

Breast lift: your breasts are elevated to a more youthful-looking position on the chest wall.

Tummy tuck: excess fat and skin are removed from the abdomen, and weakened/separated muscles are repaired.

Liposuction: areas of localized fat are removed from the body.

Recovering from Mommy Makeover

The first few days of your recovery will be the most challenging; after that, your recovery should get easier. If you experience discomfort, you can take pain medication as prescribed by Dr. DeMars. Your breasts and abdomen may feel sore and swollen and look bruised.

It’s important that you rest your body as it heals. Avoid any bending, lifting (including children!) and straining, as these movements could cause a complication to arise. Arrange for a spouse or family member to help you with household chores and childcare, so you can focus on your own body and needs.

Mommy Makeover FAQs

Am I A Candidate for A Mommy Makeover?

Ideal candidates for mommy makeover surgery are women in good overall health and close to their goal weight whose breast and abdomen are changed as a result of pregnancy and childbirth, and desire cosmetic surgery to bring their body back to its pre-pregnancy state.

Should I Wait until I’m Done Having Children to Have Mommy Makeover?

While it is possible to carry a pregnancy after abdominal contouring surgery, we recommend that you choose to do this when you are done having children.

If I’m Breast-Feeding, When Is the Earliest I Can Have Surgery?

Patients are advised to wait at least 4 months after they have finished breast-feeding to undergo most surgical procedures. Many of the antibiotics, anesthetics, and pain medications can be passed into the breast milk and can potentially cause harm to your baby. For breast procedures, it is often best to allow the breasts to reduce in size as much as possible after breast-feeding has stopped to achieve the most favorable results for a breast restoration procedure.

How Much Does Mommy Makeover Cost?

The cost of a mommy makeover varies depending on the extent of surgery needed. During your consultation with our Portland office you will be given a quote based on the best treatment plan for your unique body type and desired outcome.

How Long Is Mommy Makeover Recovery?

Recovery from a mommy makeover typically ranges between 2 and 6 weeks, but can vary considerably depending on the type of surgery considered or recommended as well as your specific needs. Dr. DeMars will provide specific information on how long of a recovery you will need based on the type of surgeries performed.

Will There Be Much Scarring with Mommy Makeover?

Scars resulting from the surgical incisions are to be expected; however, they typically fade over time. Incisions are placed in inconspicuous locations that are easily hidden beneath underwear or swimsuits.

How Safe Is Mommy Makeover?

Complications are very rare after mommy makeover procedures. The most common difficulty is slow wound healing. Obviously, with more incision lines, there is a greater possibility of wound breakdown. This is usually very minor and easily treated with basic wound care. Infections and post-operative bleeding are very rarely encountered.

Will Insurance Pay for Mommy Makeover?

Some insurance plans may cover some of your procedures. Dr. DeMars’s office staff can discuss what may or may not be covered and provide you with information on submitting insurance reimbursement claims during your consultation.

Can You Finance a Mommy Makeover?

Yes, we offer flexible financing options through both Prosper Healthcare Lending and CareCredit. You can find more information on financing your mommy makeover here.
