Why Eyelid Surgery is on the Rise

Posted on October 9, 2015 by: Dr. Ronald DeMars

In 2014, there were more than 1.4 million eyelid surgeries performed worldwide, an increase from the year before, according to the latest statistics from the International Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery. In this blog post, Dr. Ronald DeMars, a Portland plastic surgeon, explores the reasons why this procedure is on the rise.

Among the Baby Boomer Generation

More and more people are working later in life, many well past what has been traditionally considered retirement age. In particular, the Baby Boomer generation (those approximately age 50 and older) are looking to extend their careers due to the poor economy of the last few years. Because of this, many Baby Boomers seek to minimize signs of aging so they can keep up with the competitive job market.

“They find themselves competing in the workplace with a young and energetic group of coworkers,” Dr. DeMars says. “They feel the need to put forth a younger appearance and this is accomplished by taking away the tired look around the eyes from extra skin and fat pads that accumulate with age.”

Through eyelid surgery, excess skin and tissue from the upper and/or lower eyelids are removed, while the remaining skin is tightened. This allows patients to achieve the energetic and confident appearance needed to succeed in the workplace. Some patients choose to pair eyelid surgery with facelift surgery for a more refreshed, brighter overall facial appearance.

Among Younger Patients

Certain younger patients (under the age of 35) also feel the need to look even younger. For some, this heightened awareness comes from looking at their parents, who are experiencing aging changes, including sagging facial skin, wrinkles and crow’s feet around the eyes. Younger generations have increasingly become more proactive in maintaining the youthful look they associate with their age group.

Eyelid surgery helps convey a person’s optimistic energy by trimming or repositioning excess fat and skin, instantly making the eyes look bigger and brighter.
