When to Consider Labiaplasty

Posted on September 11, 2015 by: Dr. Ronald DeMars

Recent statistics from the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS) reveal labiaplasty is becoming increasingly popular among women who seek to resize or reshape the size of their vaginal lips. However, labiaplasty has yet to be as openly discussed as other procedures for many reasons. If you experience discomfort or are unhappy with the shape and size of your labia, know that you are not alone. In this blog post, plastic surgeon Dr. DeMars shares a few reasons why more and more women are considering labiaplasty.

To Boost Self-Confidence

The size and shape of a woman’s labia are determined by a number of factors. As women age, the skin on the vaginal lips can lose elasticity, causing excess skin to sag or hang. Other women may see changes to the shape and size of their labia (folds of skin outside the vagina) after pregnancy. For whatever the reason, women with enlarged or unusually shaped labia can feel self-conscious. An enlarged labia can create a noticeable and embarrassing bulge, making a woman hesitant to wear a bathing suit or leggings. Labiaplasty can sculpt a woman’s labia to a size and shape she is happier with, boosting her self-confidence both in private and public situations.

To Relieve Physical Discomfort

Women who have large inner or outer labia may feel pain or discomfort during their daily activities. For example, enlarged vaginal lips may rub up against skin or tight clothing during running or walking, causing irritation or chaffing.

Women with enlarged, elongated or unusually shaped labia may also have trouble urinating. The labia can interfere with urine being able to enter the toilet properly. This can cause a woman to soil her buttocks and inner thighs, and in turn, cause skin irritation and embarrassment.

Labiaplasty eliminates physical discomfort by removing excess labial tissue, making everyday activities such as running, walking or playing sports more enjoyable.

To Enhance Sexual Pleasure

Labiaplasty can make sexual intercourse a more pleasurable experience both physically and psychologically. An enlarged inner labia can be pulled and dragged into the vagina during intercourse, which can be embarrassing and even painful. Some women with unusually shaped or asymmetrical labia feel uncomfortable being nude in front of their sexual partners. During labiaplasty, hanging, excess skin is removed from the inner lips, eliminating pain. The procedure can also reshape the inner lips to create a more symmetrical, appealing look. Labiaplasty allows women to feel more confident, comfortable and desirable during sexual intercourse. Depending on a woman’s concerns and goals, Dr. DeMars may also perform a hoodectomy, a procedure in which the clitoris is given greater exposure to enhance sexual stimulation.
