What is a Mommy Makeover?

We get frequent emails asking “what exactly is a Mommy Makeover” as the term has become very popular in articles about plastic surgery.  The term refers not to a specific single surgical procedure, but rather is a slightly generalized term that can mean any combination of surgeries to the breasts and torso to help correct the problems that result in those areas after a mother has finished having her babies.  Patients often like to combine procedures because it is more efficient to do so. They have less healing time than would occur were the operations done separately, and it is also more efficient for their budget. The cost of combined procedures can be significantly lower than if each operation were to be done at separate times.

Breast surgery may include an augmentation alone or a lift alone if the breast volume is already satisfactory. And many patients prefer to do a lift and an augmentation to get their youthful look back. Occasionally a breast reduction and lift is requested.

Tummy surgery is called an Abdominoplasty and that operation results in a tighter and flatter and again more youthful looking abdomen. A good portion of the damaged skin below the belly button is removed along with the attached fat, and the muscles can be tightened after being separated by the growth of the baby.

Liposuction is a good compliment and usually is performed for a slimmer waist as the fat is reduced in the area patients call a “muffin top”. Liposuction may also be done to slim down the upper abdomen and the back near the bra line.

These procedures are commonly done as an outpatient so the patient returns home to recover. Most Moms are feeling pretty good by the end of the first week but not back to their employment or active care of small children for at least 2-3 weeks and not back to running and other workouts for 6-8 weeks.
